Amaranthus ‘Velvet Curtains

Amaranthus cruentus

Dark red upright plumes of dark crimson red seed heads. Amaranthus ‘Velvet Curtains’ is an exotic looking addition to your cut flower garden.

This one stands upright, the seed heads also know as the ‘Princes Feather’ balance out the vase beautifully.  Layer with the cascading varieties for sumptuous arrangements.

You can ‘pinch plants’ to increase the yield of smaller more usable stems or plant them ‘unpinched’ for dramatic garden display – the choice is yours, experiment ‘try both’!

Amaranthus comes in many colours, and you can find more of my favourites listed here in the Spring seed shop!

How to grow:

Don’t start Amaranthus too early, these half hardy plants cannot be planted until all risk of frost has passed. I sow mine under cover in spring and plant out after the last frosts, or direct sow early May.

Seeds will benefit from ‘a bit of warmth’ to germinate, 20-22°C is ideal.

Perfect for the beginner gardener Amaranthus is easy to grow and provide excellent as garden decoration. For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram

Variety:  Amaranthus cruentus
Type: Half Hardy Annual
Position: Full sun
Sow: Spring
Germination: Up to 30 days
Pinching: Pinch to encourage branching and more usable stems
Height: 100 cm
Harvest: June/July onwards

Cutting /Vase Life:

Pick when colourful seed heads have emerged and have started to elongate, stems will feel firmer to the touch.

Place straight into buckets of water and leave to rest preferably overnight this is called conditioning.  Removing most of the foliage will reduce the risk of wilting and at the same time reveal more of the colourful spires and tails.
