Orach Apple and Burgundy Mix
The perfect backdrop for late summer, filling your garden with plumes of red and green. The seed pods, look like tiny coins glinting in the sunlight and these are what I use for arrangements.
Brilliant for the allotments Orach is also known as ‘Mountain Spinach’ or ‘French Spinach’, it makes a tasty salad ingredient.
Orach will effortlessly hide fences and give privacy to boundaries. You can ‘pinch plants’ to increase the yield of smaller more usable stems or plant them ‘unpinched’ for taller dramatic garden display – the choice is yours, experiment ‘try both’!
Superb in arrangements mixed with Dahlias and I like to use them with Amaranthus. The colours blend really well and the extra texture really elevates your designs.
How to grow:
Start seeds in Spring or direct sow from mid May. I have found the ideal germination temperature to be around 20°C. If you find that seeds are being a little stubborn, you can use a heat mat, but I normally just wait for warmer weather.
Note: Self sows freely, deadhead to avoid this and don’t compost the seed heads. I like to pick stems and seed pods for drying. For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram

Cutting /Vase Life:
Young stems may benefit from searing to prevent wilting so I prefer to wait and pick Orach once the seed pods have appeared and stems that become a little woody. These stems do not need any special conditioning other than resting in water preferably overnight. Click for more detailed information on conditioning.
